I work at a gas station and I always observe the guys looking at playboy, penthouse, etc. and the women at the other end of the store looking at romance novels. Why is this?
For women, romance novels are much an impossible dream as Playboy is an impossible dream for men..Its all about what we think we want..

Women read romance books because that is what fantasize about; someone sweeping them off of their feet. If men treated their women/girlfriends/spouses with alot of romance, they wouldn’t be reading them. Women substitute those books with what they seem to be missing in their relationships OR what they hope to gain in a relationship.

Guys look at women and see a playboy magazine. Women look at men and see Don Quixote. We read about what we want and never get. Simple as that.

Maybe most of the women like reading romance novels but if I have to tell about myself – I don’t like!

It just so happens that you see them reading romance novels. Yet, the truth is, its not all the time that women read romance novels…..

Romance novels are just written porn. Women don’t get turned on by pictures the same way as men.

No offense to anyone. Women sometimes find it hard finding the right man, and a romance is sometimes where there dream man comes from. Like, i just read The Twilight Series and have total fallen for Edward. Most people have once reading it. That’s cause he is cute, protective, loving… etc…
Hope that helped

I think you are over generalising as I personally cannot stand romance novels as if you have read one you have read them all. I much prefer a good science fantasy novel with its fair share of adventure thrown in.

I don’t know. I’m happily married and I enjoy Playboy and never pick up the rag romance crap. I’ll even look at Hustler and Penthouse. Maybe the social stigma has steered them to it. No female wants to admit that they want to actually read the articles in those magazines but are curious about what other women’s vaginas and breasts look like. I don’t care what people think. I’m curious and I actually enjoy most of the articles and the insight to a "Man’s world". But, you observe this in a gas station. You don’t think that as soon as the guy leaves she’s not reading that magazine? They are. Trust me. I’m a woman and I have a lot of girlfriends that talk about worse things then what could ever be spoken in a men’s locker room.

Not all women, I love to read but I prefer to read latin-american novels because of its genre: magical realism…
I also got a question, why most of the boys like to read pulp text so much?

Because romance is what we want. Guys want cars, women want to feel loved.

Being a woman who absolutely adores romance novels (and has shelves upon shelves packed full of them) I can give you the answer you’re craving. Women love romance books for one (or both) of two reasons:
Reason #1: Many romance novels have the most wonderful love stories you will ever hear. Stories that have dashing knights in shining armor who sweep a fair maiden off her feet and whisk her off to a happily ever after. Most stories even have men who were usually cold, hard warrior-like jerks who find they have a soft spot for one person (Just ONE…in the entire world!!) You have no idea how intoxicating that is to a woman to know she is the only one who can get through to him. The only one he’s capable of loving. *dreamy sigh*
Anyway, it’s obvious to see why a lot of women are attracted to reason #1. Because there aren’t that many perfect men out there. Oh, there are many that come very very close and even the ones who aren’t perfect we still love with all our hearts (flaws and all). But even if we do love them there is always the inevitable fights and problems that normal, every day people have to deal with. So in a sense a romance novel is a type of escape, an oasis from the rocky treacherous land of real relationships.
Reason #2: The sex scenes. It is a fact that if you are hopelessly and completely in love with someone (like the hero and heroine of romance novels) then you can’t help but physically express your love. Thus, to give away what I assume is a huge feminine secret, romance novels have romantic scenes. Who’d a thunk it? Usually only 1 or 2 per book (If you get too many the book becomes, what many refer to as, a lemon. Basically porno in writing. It gets obnoxious and women usually don’t read that kind very often.)
Anyway, to sum it all up. Women read romance novels to "meet" a man who truly appreciates women for who they are. Who can see the beauty inside, not just out. And there are many real men who have these traits and if you are one of them, you’re set for life.
Hope this assuages your curiosity.
(Sorry it was so long. I think I could print this off, bind it, and publish it as a novel. Hmmmmm…..not a bad idea.)

Women are so passionate than men ( No offense). They love the feeling ‘to love and to be loved’.
In every romantic novel its always about ‘perfect couple’, ‘ made for each other’ , ‘long term relationships’ ( which women always dream about) etc etc… …..
So they read romantic novels and fantasize about love, being loved, perfect dreamy & magical sex and the life like ‘happily ever after’.

I think it’s because once a month women loose their center. When you loose your center you look for other people to help you cope. And romance is all about that. just my opinion.

I hate them! I can think of nothing worse than reading some mushy sentimental old shite!!!! I prefer blood and gore or a good crime anyday!
I’d rather poke myself in the eyes than read *puke* Mills and Boon – got my Writing Magazine last month, all excited about reading it and guess what! They had a whole feature on how to write for Mills and Boon and make great profit! I’d rather never be published then sell out to that short of shite!
Cheers.
Kez
(p.s. I’m female)

I don’t know. My personal taste runs more to murder mysteries, though I don’t mind a bit of romance mixed in with the murders, as you do get in a lot of mysteries, like those of Agatha Christie for instance. And my husband would be far more likely to want a copy of ‘model Engineer’ or ‘Sailing Today’ or something, rather than playboy.
I think everyone likes a bit of escapism, and for a lot of women, escapism means reading about women having exciting love affairs with dashing heroes. But for myself, i tend to get restive if there isn’t a murder in the first few chapters.
